Comment:
The conversion project of 100-year-old office building with State and Federal landmark designation to 357-room extended-stay hotel won the Preservation Achievement Award by Historical Preservation Society of City of Philadelphia.
Architect constantly struggled with the conflicting requirements from Landmark Commission and Building Department. Landmark Commission demanded all existing window and façade to be preserved and Building Department demanded they had to be replaced to meet current building and energy code. The challenge was to preserve all historical aspects of the building such as Art Deco façade while also satisfying functional, economical and building code requirements.
